What are the causes of dry skin

Dry skin is medically termed as xeroderma or xerodermia. It is the skin condition associated with scaling, itching and cracking. Generally, it occurs on the scalp, arms, lower legs, knuckles, and the sides of the abdomen and thighs. It is a common problem especially during cold weather, but there are conditions that need to be consulted to the specialist for proper medication.

Causes of dry skin are:

Weather – cold weather outside and hot air inside causes the relative humidity to drop, thus, leaving your skin dry.

Hot/steamy shower – Do not stay long under shower and keep its temperature lukewarm to avoid drying your skin.

Soaps – Use mild and fragrance-free sop with moisturizer to keep your skin properly nourished. Beware of the many harsh soaps in the market.

Rubbing of skin – Scrubbing is not as much recommended since, merely using your hands or soft washcloth can do the cleaning.

Towel – wiping yourself with towel after shower also contributes to dry skin. Moisture from shower should be absorbed by the skin.

Aging – it is because of hormonal change that skin gets parched during aging. So, get in the habit of keeping youself moisturized by regularly using body lotion and face and body cream that should contain alpha hydroxyl acids and retinol.

Irritantscrema al caviale can also be caused by irritation to certain fabrics or perfume.

Skin disease – there are chronic conditions when skin is specially scaly and red. It could be atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, or a symptom of another health problem such as diabetes or an underactive thyroid gland.
